Intended Audience
This activity is intended for oncology nurses and nurse practitioners, as well as other health care professionals interested in the care of elderly patients with hematologic malignancies.
Overall Purpose
The overall purpose of this activity is to present the latest developments in care of elderly patients with hematologic malignancies and enhance the delivery of state-of-the-art medical care. This educational program will support the adherence to evidence-based practice and guidelines and allow the better integration of new therapies into clinical practice, with the greatest impact on improving patient outcomes and enhancing the quality of life in elderly patients with hematologic malignancies.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be better able to
- Discuss the epidemiology of hematologic malignancies in the elderly
- Identify unique physiologic, social, and financial needs of the older patient with a hematologic malignancy
- Discuss the most recent updates on the care of elderly patients with hematologic malignancies
- Outline effective treatment for the older adult in selected hematologic malignancies (MDS, CLL, MM and NHL)
- Discuss nursing management of common disease- or treatment-related adverse events specific to the elderly patient with a hematologic malignancy
